Digicel Throws Support behind Pirates Week Cardboard Boat Regatta
Cardboard Fun was a “Sink or Swim” Situation
George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands – November 22, 2011: Digicel was a major supporter of the recently concluded Cardboard Boat Race organized by Build Cayman and the Pirates Week Committee.
Through an injection of cash and mobile phones totaling over $6,000, Digicel played an important role in making the voyage possible on 19th November 2011, starting off at the South Pier in George Town, Grand Cayman. There were many giveaways of mobile phones including BlackBerry smartphones for First place, Best Dressed Team, Most Spectacular Sink and Samsung smartphones for the Best Youth Relay Winning Team.
The race participants were mainly representatives of corporate entities, with 19 companies registering which was the highest number of participants in the history of the sport in Cayman. Digicel registered its own five-member Cardboard Boat Team sporting an eye-catching Christmas theme. The overall winner was an elated MEPCO team.
CEO of Digicel Cayman Victor Corcoran said “We were definitely delighted to support such a fun-filled and worthy cause, specifically as it benefits the Lighthouse School. The Cardboard Boat Race is a reminder of Cayman’s heritage, reminding us of the days of boat-building. The proceeds of this sponsorship were in aid of building the playground at the Lighthouse School which will allow for a safe and fun recreational environment. We are also thankful for the increased response this year from participants. This also represents their belief in the importance of helping those in need.”
“Build Cayman was thrilled to work with all corporate entities involved. Digicel’s contribution was valuable as their sponsorship contribution was donated to the special needs playground at the Lighthouse School,” said Russell Linford of Build Cayman.
