George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands – October 25, 2010:   Digicel and the Pirates Week Executive Committee are getting ready to thrill Cayman Island residents through the 33rd staging of the annual Pirates Week Festival, proudly sponsored by Digicel.

With annual investment valuing over CI$30,000, Digicel once again stamps it’s commitment to giving back to communities and culture. Pirates Week 2010 marks Digicel’s fifth year of sponsorship to a festival which attracts both local residents and tourists.  In true Digicel style, the company will join the cultural festivities by offering its support to the organizing committee and unveiling an exciting line-up of its latest products, services and promotional souvenirs.

The celebration is set to start on 6th November in Little Cayman, then continue to Grand Cayman from 12th–22nd November and closing at the Watering Place in Cayman Brac during 26th-27th November 2010.  There will be a Pre-Pirates Week launch Happy Hour party at Breezes-By-The-Bay in George Town on 11th November.

CEO of Digicel, Victor Corcoran, complimented the festival by saying “Pirates Week is representative of Cayman’s alluring past and vibrant future.  Digicel is proud to endorse an event that continues to entertain and educate residents and visitors about the intriguing cultural icons within the Cayman Islands.  Digicel is committed to the development of Cayman through technology, culture and community involvement.  We are delighted to play such an important role through Digicel’s 5th year of sponsorship and active involvement.”

Pirates Week has grown significantly since the festival’s inception 33 years ago by then Minister of Tourism, the late Hon. James Bodden.  The festival pays tribute to Cayman’s alluring past, through re-dramatization of times when the islands were frequented by some of the most infamous pirates, in a fun-filled and more entertaining program of activities.

Executive Director of the National Festival (Pirates Week), Bernie Bush said “Pirates Week is pleased to be sponsored by Digicel and other important members of the business community.  The festival is an important event for the Cayman Islands as it represents an important part of our culture and history.  It is through the significant contributions of the government, corporate and private citizens that we continue to celebrate this cultural asset.”

Digicel, a noted cultural advocate since the company launched in 2004, has supported the event over the past five years.  This year, Digicel in partnership with Cayman Airways and the Pirates Week Executive Committee will be offering an SMS texting service for free, that allows residents to text special messages to a short-code which will then be projected to a screen and broadcasted to the crowd of revelers during the Street Dance & Food Festival on 13th November.

This year’s fun-filled activities for the world-renowned heritage festival include Pirates Week Landing Pageant, 5k Run, Miss Festival Queen Costume Competition, National Song Competition, Street Dance, Sea Swim, Underwater Treasure Hunt, Children’s Fun Day, Trial of the Pirates, Cardboard Race, Fireworks and the must see Street Parade!

Pirates Week has been embraced by Cayman’s Bigger, Better Network as the event represents the single, largest heritage project that unifies the people of the Cayman Islands in celebration of their past.  Like Pirates Week, Digicel takes pride in its roots as a Caribbean company for Caribbean people, culture and lifestyle.
