Digicel launched in the Cayman Islands on March 3rd, 2004 and dramatically changed the telecommunications landscape. The company’s arrival to the local market signaled the introduction of a number of innovative products, exceptional service and great value for money for consumers in Cayman.
Today, with local investments exceeding US$32 million, Digicel continues to drive mobile innovation as an instrument of change, setting a high precedent in service, value and coverage. The company acquired a significant 33% market share within its first year. Five years later, Digicel has continued to grow and now represents 50% of the local market share as Cayman’s Bigger, Better network that is bolstered by 54 cellular towers, 13 dealer stores and over 50 employees spread across the three islands – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
Digicel was the first to introduce many innovative products and services to Cayman such as, closed-user-group (CUG), Prepaid Roaming service, ‘Call Me’, rollover minutes of unused bundle minutes, per second billing and many more and continues to lead the industry in terms of new products and services, the most recent being its launch of a portable Prepaid Broadband service and KidSafe, an internet content filtering product based on network technology.
As, Cayman’s Bigger, Better Network, Digicel continues to offer its customers opportunities to talk and text more while spending less with the recent launch of its Day Pass suite of promotions. Cayman customers are now able to and text the world for only $1 make all their local Digicel calls for only $1 and make all their regional Digicel calls for $3 a day.
The mobile company also invests significantly in major promotions and prizes to reward its valued customers. Over the last 5 years Digicel has given away a wide range of prizes such as a Hummer H3, a Lexus IS 250, $40,000 cash and three 2009 VW Beetle motorcars to list a few.
Digicel Cayman has been a good corporate citizen, strong supporter and champion of community development, demonstrated by its involvement in a number of community projects, organizations and events. The company has been main sponsors of Pirates Week, Taste of Cayman and numerous football tournaments organized in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Football Association (C.I.F.A.). Other sports have also benefitted from the company’s support such as the Flower’s Sea Swim, Cayman Islands Marathon, Royal Cayman Islands Police Cricket Club, Special Olympics team, the Digicel Demons Basketball team and the local Rugby Club. In September 2009, Digicel in association with the Cayman Islands Cricket Association held its first Cricket Coaching Clinics for the Cayman Islands in which 41 of our local youth cricketers were coached and guided by West Indies cricket icons Chris Gayle, Jerome Taylor and Kenny Benjamin in a two-day event.
Digicel’s commitment to the Cayman Islands was cemented in it relief efforts after the devastation and ravages of Hurricanes Ivan and Paloma – two of the worst natural disasters experienced by the region. The company allocated a total of US$1.5 million to the restoration of the islands after Hurricane Ivan in 2004, through the provision of housing, alternative power (generators) and basic supplies such as food, clothing and medical items. Similarly, on November 7, 2008 after Hurricane Paloma, Digicel air-lifted their rescue team of engineers and employees into the disaster zone to assist residents of the Sister Islands who were badly affected. The company also partnered with the National Hurricane Relief Fund and the Hazard Management Cayman Islands to aid the restoration process for the Cayman Islands.
